Head of prominent French wine family to oversee new Otago vineyard

Baroness Ariane de Rothschild, president of the board of Edmond de Rothschild Group, will visit New Zealand in April to oversee the establishment of the company’s first organic wine production facility at Akarua vineyard in Central Otago’s Bannockburn.

Madame de Rothschild will be accompanied by a group of influential international wine writers who will review Akarua and the company’s other local vineyard, Rimapere, in Marlborough.

The event will also mark the first time a member of the Edmond de Rothschild family has visited New Zealand.

Bordeaux based Edmond de Rothschild Heritage Wines has more than 500 hectares of vines on nine estates across four continents.

The company is looking to its recent Central Otago acquisition to become its flagship, certified organic vineyard.

The Bannockburn vineyard will produce more than 60,000 bottles of organic wine annually for the international and domestic markets, once fully converted and organically certified.

Distribution agreements across 80 countries will see wines produced at the group’s New Zealand vineyards served at thousands of premium hospitality venues around the world.

Madame de Rothschild says that they are committed to developing their New Zealand vineyards to full potential and contributing to the country’s international reputation for the production of fine wines.

“For over a decade, Edmond de Rothschild Heritage has recognised the potential of New Zealand soils to produce exceptional wine, firstly within our vineyard in Marlborough which is primarily dedicated to producing Sauvignon Blanc and now Bannockburn which will allow us to expand our domestic and export volumes of Pinot Noir and become our first certified organic vineyard.

“International awareness of New Zealand’s wine industry has risen significantly in recently years,” she says.
