An American brewery started by surfers, fishermen and “people who love the sea” has created a six-pack beer holder than feeds, rather than kills, marine life.

Florida-based Saltwater Brewery collaborated with New York ad agency We Believers to create 100% biodegradable, compostable, edible and plastic-free six-pack rings for beer.

The rings are made from barley and wheat – by-products of the brewing process – and are safe for fish, turtles, birds and other marine life to consume.

“An estimated one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles become entrapped in plastic or ingest it and die [each year],” says marine biologist Mark Tokulka.

It is the goal of Saltwater Brewery for other craft and large breweries to follow their lead which would mean the cost of manufacturing the rings would reduce and be competitive with the plastic rings.

“We want to influence the big guys and inspire them to get on board,” says Saltwater Brewery President Chris Cove.
