Spotlight on a local: The Corner

Each week we will be featuring a local bar, pub or club to help boost the Kiwi hospitality industry and encourage customers to get out and explore!

This week, Vicky Marschall shares an insight into the popular Howick hole-in-the-wall, The Corner.

How has business been going during this tough year?
It would be a lie to say it wasn’t challenging – we had to find new ways to stay relevant in the minds of our locals during Level 4, for example through our digital channels. During Level 3 we reinvented our business by offering a special takeaway menu or a BBQ Sizzle Up on the street. But with the amazing support of our locals and great team spirit, we came out stronger than ever.

What have you been doing to encourage customers to come/come back to your local?
Our whole concept is based on the customer’s experience. The key here for us is consistency – we strive to keep our levels of service, as well as the quality of our food and drink offerings, the same under any circumstances. Also, we always aim to stay relevant and on top of current trends. Our ever-changing specials board as well as frequently rotating cocktail creations keep things fresh and exciting.

How would you describe the atmosphere of The Corner?
We like to think of it as a slice of the city just around The Corner. We have one of the smallest bars around which we use to our advantage to create a personal and cosy atmosphere. Think lowlights, brick walls, buzzing music, elevated dining and drinks delivered by our quality staff that love what they do. Our team is always encouraged to put their personalities out there and have a bit of banter with the locals.

What is your signature drink?
Our ‘Special Gin & Tonic’ menu has been a huge success this spring. Instead of the ‘build your own gin & tonic’ trend, we offer six Gin & Tonics that stand out from the rest.
The ‘Trip to Italy’ has also been a favourite, bringing a slice of the Amalfi Coast directly to our guests that can’t travel under the current circumstances! It features Malfy Limone, Cinzano 1757, Peach Schnapps and the East Imperial Grapefruit Tonic.

Why do you think your local stands out from the crowd?
Our aim has always been to cater for the East Auckland community that wants the city centre feel without having to Uber all the way there and back. At The Corner Howick, you will always find good food and drinks, good times and good laughs.

What are your 3 top tips for being a great bartender?
Listen, be kind and make awesome drinks
