Six-week-old Kiwi distillery wins big at the 2023 SFWS competition

Tauranga’s Clarity Distilling Company has taken home the second highest award at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Founded by George White and Stephanie Downer, Clarity had only been operational for six weeks prior to winning Double Gold for its first ever batch of commercially made dry gin.

Clarity dry is the distillery’s trademark gin, a classic London dry style gin made using botanicals including cassia bark, liquorice root, lemon peel, angelica root, cardamom pods, and more.

“If you want to win a competition or you want to do well at the competition, you’ve got to do well at San Fran,” Downer told The NZ Herald.

“That’s the one you want to do well at because it’s recognised worldwide as a massive achievement.”

The only higher award than Double Gold at SFWS is platinum and it is only awarded to entries that had received Double Gold for three consecutive years.

The distillery’s other offering – the Clarity 2023 gin – received a Gold medal at the 2023 New Zealand Spirits Awards.

“As a new distillery, we are truly humbled by the recognition of our gins on both the local and international stages,” said White and Downer.
