Locally made wine, beer and whiskey win big at Pride In Print 2021

Locally made wine, beer and whiskey won three of the top prizes at the 2021 Pride In Print awards, with alcohol related products and their packaging making up a quarter of the category winners.

The awards were announced at a gala dinner held in Auckland hosted by Seven Sharp’s Hilary Barry and comedian Ben Hurley.

The Sparkling Brut Rosé label from the McBride Sisters Hawke’s Bay winery collection unanimously took out the top label category, competing with other wine and food labels, as well as booklets and stickers.

It was described by judges as one of the best ever wine labels seen in the Pride In Print Awards’ 28-year history.

“I’ve never seen anything like this one, it’s definitely one of the best labels produced. It’s technically brilliant,” said judge Gary Gibbon.

The embellishments included an all-over matt varnish, spot matt varnish, rotary hot foil, textured emboss, sculptured emboss and gloss high build.

Central Otago-based Lammermoor Distillery’s limited edition whiskey won the Paper & Board Packaging category with its solid black and embossed cardboard display box, foiled with the distillery’s insignia, complete with a stag head.

And a display box for DB Breweries’ recently launched Club Setter Seltzer drinks won the Structural Design category.

It was entered by APC Innovate who has taken out the category win for the third year in a row, being the only winner of this category since it was introduced in 2019.

Judges said the cardboard display unit stood out from the rest of this year’s display entries because of the degree of difficulty it presented.

It was constructed to take a lot of weight with cans on top, and the internal structure had been cleverly thought out and perfectly assembled.
