Celebrate sparkling on Méthode Marlborough Day

Méthode Marlborough Day is taking place on March 29, 2024, and is an opportunity to celebrate premium New Zealand sparkling wine and toast the close of the Marlborough sparkling grape harvest.

Marlborough’s sparkling wine harvest occurs earlier than that of still wine, with fruit being picked within a specific window of time when acidity levels sit slightly advanced to its brix counterpart.

Marlborough is known for its high sunshine hours and cool nights, and it is the combination of this climate and the regions unique terroir that enables the production of quality Méthode Traditionnelle.

This year, the Méthode harvest arrived earlier than usual, with handpicking commencing on many vineyards as early as mid-February.

“The 2024 growing year promises to be exceptional, particularly for Méthode Marlborough varietals,” says Stewart Maclennan, Senior Winemaker at Saint Clair.

“We may have even broken records for the earliest pick in Marlborough this year.”

With minimal disease pressure and optimal growing conditions, the 2024 harvest is set to yield wines of unparalleled quality, boasting vibrant fruit flavours and impeccable balance.

“Our dry-farmed ‘Maybern Vineyard’ in Koromiko, sheltered from the wind and blessed with steep slopes, has witnessed early and even ripening, thanks to ample sun exposure in this dry season,” says Edel Everling of Johanneshof Cellars.

Held annually by Méthode Marlborough – a grower-led society committed to the production of world-class sparkling wine – Méthode Marlborough Day recognises the superb quality of traditional method sparkling wines produced in the Marlborough region.
